A BRIEF HISTORY OF BURGESS HILL TOWN WFC [ Formerly BHTLFC, Haywards Heath Town L.F.C and initially Hassocks Ladies F.C)

For the 1st 21 years the Club was known as Hassocks - starting in 1978 as Hassocks Girls and finally being Hassocks Ladies F.C
At the start of the 2002/3 season a Club, which was previously called Southdown Ladies, announced it had changed its name to Hassocks Ladies Football Club. This was very confusing to people who despite our name change still looked on us as Hassocks - We have no connection with this Club.
The Club was formed at the start of the 1978/9 season as a group of 11 to 14 year old girls, and immediately entered the Sussex Martlet League. They were promoted to Div 1 in 1983/4 season & a Reserve Team was formed. In the 1987/88 season the League expanded to 3 Divs , Hassocks became founder members of the Premier Div, reached the last 16 in the WFA Cup, & had a successful tour of Canada.
In the 89/90 season in the renamed South East Counties League the Club were runners up in the Premier Div & finalists in the League Cup, the Premier Div Cup & the Reserve Team Cup, so becoming TOP CLUB IN SUSSEX.
In the 90/91 season we WON the League Cup, were runners up in the Premier Div again, and again reached the last 16 in the WFA Cup, so retaining our position as TOP CLUB IN SUSSEX. The Reserves reached the Final of the Reserve Team Cup for the 3rd year in succession, won the Sportsmanship award and were elected to the top Div (Div 1) of the SEC League, the only Reserve Team to be in the Top Division. We also launched a 3rd team, so becoming the only club to have 3 teams competing in the League.
In the 91/92 season we were founder members of the National Women's Football League, playing in Div 1 South and finishing a very creditable 3rd, and also reached the quarter finals of the WFA Cup for the 1st time, once again being TOP CLUB IN SUSSEX. The Reserves played in the top Div of the SEC League and reached the Div 1 Cup Final.
The 92/93 season saw the Club change its name from ‘HASSOCKS BEACON LFC ‘ to ‘HASSOCKS LFC'. The 1st team gained the 'Runners-up' spot in Div 1 South of the National League, way ahead of the other Sussex teams, achieving the ‘double' over both Brighton and Saltdean so once again we were TOP CLUB IN SUSSEX. The Reserves , the only Reserve in the top Div of the SEC League finishing a very creditable 6th.
Following this successful run the 93/94 season saw a very sharp decline in the Clubs fortunes, the 1st team finishing bottom of the National League, the Reserves bottom of Div 1 of the SEC League and the 3rds similarly placed.
For the 94/95 season we re-organised, using our resources to run 2 teams only, and saw the start of a recovery, the 1st team finishing strongly to finish 6th in Div 1 of the SEC League and the Reserves showing promise for the future.
The 95/96 season did not see the hoped for improvement in form, but the 1st team did win the Div 1 sportsmanship trophy.
At the start of the 96/97 season our Team Manager in our 'glory years', John Pratt, rejoined as 1st Team Manager & Club coach, and a very noticeable change in playing fortunes came about.
The 97/98 season saw both teams in the South East Counties WFL do very well, the 1st team achieving its objective in qualifying for the new Combination Div of the FA (coming 3rd in the Premier Div), and the Reserves reached the Reserve Team Cup Final. We also for the 1st time joined the Sussex Girls League (which plays 7 a side matches) and entered a team at U12 level.
The 98/99 season the 1st team found the transition to the FA Combination League very difficult and finished bottom. The Reserve Team, with many new players, saw an improvement in playing standards over the season whilst in the Sussex Girls League (7 a side) the U13 have enjoyed their football and the U15 team reached the Cup Final.
For the 1999/2000 season the Club changed its name to reflect the co-operation with Haywards Heath Town F.C, both senior teams being in the South East Counties WFL, the 1sts in the Premier Div and the Reserves in Div 3 (South) and our U13 team now the U14 team with the U15's joining the senior squads. We WON the Chairmans Cup.
The 2000/2001 season saw us return to running 3 teams in the SECWFL, the 1st team narrowly missed promotion to the Premier Div, the 2nds won the Div3(N) Sportsmanship award whilst the 3rds reached the Reserve Team Cup Final.
The 2001/2002 season saw us continuing to run 3 teams in the SECWFL, but with the reduction of the number of Teams, and therefore Divisions in the League, to comply with FA Requirements our 3rd Team was called Haywards Heath United. We are again the only "Club" with 3 teams in the League.
OUR UNITED TEAM GAINED PROMOTION TO DIV 2, OUR 1sts REACHED THE CHAIRMANS CUP FINAL AND JUST MISSED PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER DIV, COMING 3rd IN DIV 1, ONE POSITION BETTER THAN LAST SEASON
The 2002/2003 season saw us return to running 3 teams as one Club in the SECWFL, the 1st team being in Div 1, the 2nds in Div 2 and the 3rds in Div 3. The 1sts WON the Chairmans Cup, the 2nds reached the final of the Reserve Team Cup and received the Leagues "Div 2 Sportsmanship Award" whilst 3rd team Keeper Claire Imray received the Leagues "Div 3 Player of the Year Award".
Both the 1sts and 2nds have gained promotion after finishing 3rd in their respective Divisions. The 1sts are therefore back in the PREMIER DIV after 3 seasons in Div 1.
The 2003/2004 season saw our 2nd Team promoted, the 1st team retain Premier Div status and also reach the FINAL of the Sussex County FA Challenge Cup for the 1st time . The 2nds, having been promoted for the 2nd season running did very well in Div 1 finishing 4th, ahead of the other two promoted teams whilst the 3rds finished strongly in Div 3(s).
The 2004/2005 season saw our 2nd Team receiving the "Div 2 Sportsmanship Award" whilst the 3rds reached the FINAL of the SCFA Challenge Trophy
The 2006/2007 season saw our 1st Team receiving the "Div 1[W] Sportsmanship Award"
The 2007/2008 season saw us being awarded the Sussex County FA Charter Standard Adult Club Award
We are the ONLY Womens Club to receive an award this season !!! - A Womens Club has NEVER received the Adult Club Award before.
Our 2nds reached the FINAL of the trophy competition, losing on penalities.
The 2008/2009 season saw us having the best season for quite a while , the 1st Team finishing Runners Up in Div 1[W] , and GAINED PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER DIV reaching the FINAL of the Chairmans Cup [losing in "sudden death " penalities] and once again receiving the "Div 1[W] Sportsmanship Award".. The 2nds finished in midposition in the SCW&GFL, their best position since the League was formed.
We also were awarded the Sussex County FA Charter Standard Adult Club Award for the 2nd season running
The 2009/2010 season saw a continuation of our improvement , the 1st Team finishing midway in the Premier Div . The 2nds finished in their best position in the SCW&GFL and gained PROMOTION to the SECWFL.
We also were awarded the Sussex County FA Charter Standard Adult Club Award for the 3rd season running
The 2010/2011 season was a great season for our 1st team , we finished as "Runners Up" in only our 2nd season back in the Premier Div. The 2nds returned to the SECWFL, had a difficult season adjusting to the higher level but were delighted to avoid relegation back to the SCW&GFL.
The 2011/2012 season was another great season for our 1st team , we finished as "Runners Up" for the 2nd season running in the Premier Div. The 2nds season in Div1[W] was not so succesful despite an excellent team spirit
The 2014/2015 season saw us becoming Burgess Hill Town L.F.C with the 1sts having their best season for 3 seasons , finishing in the top half of the Premier Div.
The 2015/2016 season was not a great season , we finished bottom of the Premier Div and were relegated , our 2nds reached the FINAL of the SCW&GFL League Cup , losing 4-1 to Lewes.
The 2016/2017 season saw us running just one team as we commenced our "rebuild " phase . We WON the Chairmans Cup , and finished a creditable 4th in Div1[W] gaining the max 12 points from the last four fixtures.
The 2017/2018 season we carried on running just one team as we continued our "rebuild " phase . We reached the final of the SCFA Trophy
The 2018/2019 season we again reached the final of the SCFA Trophy and also reached the semifinal of the League cup and finished a creditable 3rd in Div 1[W].
The 2019/2020 We are now called BURGESS HILL TOWN WOMENS FOOTBALL CLUB and reached the semifinal of the Chairman Cup , losing in extra time , The League season was abandoned due to the Coronovirus.
